Overview

The Star Hotel in Southampton offers a central location, convenient for exploring the city's attractions, restaurants, and the West Quay shopping mall. Guests appreciate the hotel's convenient parking, though it incurs an extra charge, and the friendly and helpful staff are frequently praised. However, reviews also mention that the hotel is older and could benefit from some modernisation, with some rooms described as tired and in need of updating. The bathrooms, in particular, are noted as being dated in some instances. Noise levels from the street can be an issue due to the age of the building and windows.

looks like two (or more) separate buildings, so trying to align the lifts and stairways was a bit confusing. It's old and tired and could definitely use a thorough cleaning, but the service was pretty good. (It's possible that it is coming up against the end of the season, so hopefully, there will be some refreshing of the public areas and rooms during the off season) I noted that mom needed a room near the elevator, so they kindly upgraded her room to accommodate her. The next morning, the cruise ship boarding had been delayed, so the staff stored luggage for everyone as well as provided a lounge to wait. Decent walk to the Princess cruise ship terminal and a somewhat reasonable price made it an overall decent choice.

They made me wait an hour and i had to reassert myself. Then i got a room in the back with view of parking lot. Construction next door and delivery trucks started at 5am.

I stay here quite often as I travel a lot and never been dissatisfied until now, very poor staff and room was very dated with a creaky bed, this place used to be great but unfortunately I don’t think I’ll be stopping again

The parking bays in the hotel parking area are very tight and the bed we slept in was rather “tired”; both bed and mattress need replacement. But the staff were excellent, the hotel is centrally situated in walking distance of most city centre attractions such as the SeaCity Museum and Art Gallery. We’ll be happy to stay there again. Overall, good value for the money.

Ideal location with parking. Great restaurants on the door step. West quay shopping mall just a few minutes walk. Friendly helpful staff. Room was fine but bathroom very dated and very very little pressure in shower - more if a drip!! Breakfast was lovely. Plenty of choice

I was in Southampton for an evening meal and work related party - The Star offered best value overnight accommodation on Hotels.com, and was well placed for the venues I was visiting. Reception was excellent - car parking easy to slot into...the room, though "old" was clean and tidy, neatly decorated and comfortable. Despite being in the middle of a busy cosmopolitan city there was minimal noise during the night and I slept like a log...check out was simple - I was heading elsewhere for breakfast but walked through the restaurant and what I saw looked good so maybe next time (though to be honest if you're in Southampton and its not out of the way Halladays will always be the place to go to start the day!)

I don’t agree being a guest and paying for parking at the same hotel I’ve already paid for

We booked based on location and just needed somewhere cheap and cheerful to stay after a night out in Southampton. We weren’t expecting anything amazing but were actually pleasantly surprised and would stay again as it was good value for money. The place could do with updating and modernising but our room was spacious (we only booked a small double) and clean, the staff were friendly and helpful and breakfast was good. It was also nicely decorated for xmas. It’s a quirky 18th century building with lots of history to it so floors are a bit creaky and wonky and we did suffer with lots of noise from the street as the very old sash windows didn’t really close properly and could do with being refurbed! But for the price and the central location with parking it was worth it.

I only booked a room because I needed somewhere to put my head down after a night out, if I'd been staying longer I'd have asked for a refund and found a different hotel. There was mould all over the bathroom ceiling and round the bedroom window, grime on the window frames, a metal pipe sticking out of the floor by the radiator, the fixtures were in a dilipidated state with various things loose and broken and it just seemed like a lack of care in general. Also be aware that there isnt enough parking for everyone staying there and they had closed the car park. The staff were friendly and helpful though.
